Every dog breed has certain characteristics that set them apart from other breeds. So, I’ve compiled my top 10 list, in no particular order, of Lab characteristics. Please feel free to leave a comment if you have anything to add to the list! 🙂
Perhaps the friendliest breed there is. If there is a friendlier breed, I’ve yet to find it. Labs love everyone and everything. That big ‘otter’ tail rarely stops wagging and even non-Lab people can’t help but smile when they encounter a Labrador! Their loving nature makes Labradors very popular as assistance and therapy dogs.
Labs just love to play. They will happily fetch a tennis ball for hours on end. They also enjoy games that challenge them mentally. There’s a number of great ‘interactive’ games and toys around that do just that. I’d definitely recommend adding at least one of these type of toys to your dog’s collection.
3. Labs love food
The majority of Labradors will eat pretty much anything. Unfortunately, sometimes that can work against them. It’s not uncommon for them to eat things that are harmful to them. Check out my article ‘101 crazy things Labradors have eaten‘ for more on this topic.
Labs have bags of energy and lots of exercise is vital for their physical and mental wellbeing. A tired Lab is a happy Lab. Without sufficient exercise, Labs are prone to weight gain leading to an array of health problems. If our dogs are getting plenty of exercise then so are we. A win-win situation!
5. They shed….a lot!
A home without dog hair isn’t really a home though right? Labs are prolific shedders but fortunately, there’s some excellent grooming tools around such as the FURminator that help keep the amount of shedding down.
6. They never grow up
Six weeks, six years or 16 years old, given the opportunity, Labs live life to the fullest. They never lose that famous Labrador love of life.
Okay, so Labs might come across as a bit ‘goofy’ at times but they are also very intelligent. In fact, they are one of the top 10 most intelligent dog breeds. Brains as well as beauty!
8. Highly trainable
Labradors are incredibly eager to please and this makes them highly trainable. They are very responsive to reward based training and are quick learners.
9. Great companions
Labs make great companions. They are always happy to play with you, go for a walk with you or just lounge around doing nothing with you. Their needs are simple. As long as they have food, exercise and your love, they are happy.
10. Labs have the ‘waggiest’ tails in the world
That classic Labrador ‘otter’ tail rarely stops wagging and it can clear a coffee table with a single swipe!! 🙂
