So many of our Lab friends are not allowed on furniture. Guess I just never seemed to have a problem with it. I figure if someone wants to come to my house, they know I have 3 dogs and they live here and you may end up with a dog either in your lap or sitting beside you. I WILL put them in the back if someone is very offended or afraid of dogs, but most of our friends know the drill and done seem to mind.
At night....Shadow sleeps on my feet. I often find myself in a ball, because I can't move. I have Wizard in my back, Shadow on my feet and Miranda in the back of my legs.
Miranda, however, is my BrownieLocks. She likes to spread herself around. She will sometimes sleep on the dog bed, on the futon in the study, in Carmen's room, or on the couch. You just never know. I often wonder what makes her decide just where she is going to sleep. But Shadow is always....and I mean ALWAYS, on my feet.
My dogs know all about the purpose of a pillow, too. And love soft blankets.
I DO keep a blanket over the comforter on my bed and on my couch to protect them from fur and feet. Sometimes my dogs will lick things. I dont know if there is something to it, but I was told they do this for several reasons....one being their tongue itches and one being boredom.

Monty is allowed on the furniture. He lies on one of his many blankets. If there is no blanket on the sofa, he will go and fetch one and lie on it. He also loves to lie with his head on a cushion just like a human. The sofa is brown and he blends in rather well with it

On the subject of licking, Monty will lick ANYTHING. I have even had to stop him licking TOADS
  2.
Our couch is brown, as well....so is what used to be MY recliner. It's been claimed by whichever dog gets to it first. There does seem to be something about soft blankets they love, huh? I have one that seems to shed on the dogs are much as they do on it. I tell them it's getting them back.
Toads? Now, you have GOT to get a picture of Monty doing that for us and post it. I can't see Miranda not going after a toad, but we do have this huge turtle. When I saw huge....I am talking the shell is about the size of a steering wheel in diameter. We are talking a big one to be in a neighborhood. We do have a creek that runs along side our side yard, so it travels around a good bit. Miranda and Shadow both like to find it in the yard where it will hang out and go nose to nose with it. They have never tried to harm it and dont even bark at it. Just like to watch it.
  3.
Polly isn't allowed on furniture or the bed, unfortunately. (My fiance doesn't like it--personally, I don't think it's fair since the cats are allowed up.) She does have her own dog bed, monogrammed with her name. (My fiance thought I was crazy for getting it monogrammed, but I like it.) Polly sleeps on her dog bed next to my side of the bed. Sometimes I wake up and find her staring at me, which can be a bit unnerving. She won't move from her bed unless one of us gives her the okay -- or if the cat happens to walk by and she happens to want to chase the cat. She doesn't really lick things, just people and other animals (I'm sure she would lick a toad or turtle, if given the opportunity).
  4.
I guess we just were too soft with my dogs beginning when I got married and was finally allowed to have my own inside pets. Prior to that, I lived at home while attending UGA. I begged to let our dog come live inside and she said when I got married or moved into a place of my own, have at it...have as many dogs as I wanted in my own house. When she comes to visit and proclaims my house looks like a kennel, I remind her of her words!
Our yellow lab Ghost used to do that staring at me thing to. He would stare for no telling how long and when I would open my eyes he would do a faint "Woof". Each "Woof" got louder until I would finally get up. We still laugh about it. He would wait, however, until he saw my eyes open to start his woofing, which was polite.
  5.
Otis has his own chair in the living room. if we have company over they know it is his chair...he will usually let then sit but he will let you know when your time is up and he wants it back. He will sit in front of you and stare until you move! He also sleeps in bed with me and my husband. He like to be right in the middle. Once my husband gets up for work he will move on to his side of the bed and use his pillow!

My 3 labs are allowed where ever they want, my house is their house. I do have a blanket to put on the couch for when they come in, cause on occasion they have dried mud in their fur, 7 1/2 months old, they have to play!!!!!!!!!!!
  6.
Otis sounds like what we have here with Miranda and Wizard. Both like the recliner. It's a first come, first serve deal, but they will stand there and stare at you if you are in it too long. They do know what MOVE means and know they are thinking MOVE!
We have the same issues with having a "Lab divider" in the bed. Miranda will do that....and has no problem taking over the spot of anyone who makes the mistake of going to the bathroom or to the kitchen to get a drink of water. You move it....you lose it!
MsKaren...you have 3 lab puppies? If so...holy cow! I dont think I have that much energy. LOL

yes 3 black lab puppies, they are now 7 1/2 months old now, we addopted them when they were 6 1/2 weeks old. in the beginning we had a playpen fence thingy for them because we had to contain them somewhat, cause yeahhhhhhhhh it was alot of work. they are good puppies!!!!
  7.
Well, we had 2 Old English Sheepdog puppies from the same litter about 20 years ago. I actually found they were no more trouble than having one to deal with as pups. We just did like people with twins did.....each took turns, or took one, did things with them together and they grew up really close and were never apart, til my female died from congestive heart failure at the age of 6. Her brother lived to be 13. I had no trouble house breaking them and they would herd my now 19 year old daughter, when she would go in the yard. That poor kid couldnt walk more than 2 feet without them getting on each side of her, trying to keep her where they felt she would be safest. At times she would just drop down on the ground and cry because she couldnt move. She says she remembers a lot of that from when she was small. They were great baby sitters if I was working in the yard. But three.....Lawdy....not sure I could have done triplets. Bet your 3 lab pups are fun to watch when they play, however.
  8.
King Blaze is allowed on the furniture. Craig talked all big & bad before we got him, but he's the one who allowed him up on the furniture first! It's funny, Blaze will wait for Craig to get off the couch and move right into his spot immediately!!!
  9.
Miranda and Shadow do the same thing. If you get up, they assume it's up for grabs. It's all in who sees it first. Of course, neither have a problem jumping on there on top of each other to see who can end up with it. I have seen Shadow laying on Miranda's back a few times, using her as his pillow. Same thing in the bed...you get up, you return to a bed warmer in your spot.
They are good about if you give them a look like what are you doing here....they move. Or simply....saying Um....that is MY spot...Move!...that works. I guess I just always looked at it like this....it's OUR home and while I will protect my nice comforters with a blanket and my couch with one, our house looks lived in. It's no show place and my kids friends always liked coming to hang out at our house because they could be comfortable and have fun. That meant dogs in your lap or to use as pillows if playing games on the floor, dogs laying across the bed with you to watch TV, and dogs begging for that last bite of whatever you were eating. Truth be known....I am perfectly content having my dogs as part of the family and if that offends friends, then we didnt need to hang out at my house anyway!
  10.
Cooper is allowed on the furniture, I guess i consider him part of the family. He has to be right next to someone all the time. As for the bed-he is always right at the foot of the bed all stretched out. I can't even stretch out! LOL. I totally agree with msdeputy2uk9, if the dog and his fur offends you then you don't need to come to my house.
  11.
Amen! My house is also "lived in". I feel the same way....if the fur offends anyone, stay out of my house!
  12.
Mike is not allowed on any furniture. He has his own pet bed and is allowed to curl up in any room in our house.. In away he is on the furniture with his shedding black hair everywhere...
  13.
My Old English Sheepdogs never attempted to get on furniture and we never invited them on it. With the others, guess we were lax and then just figured they were there and it was their house, too. LOL
Ours love their bed, but love everything.
I think this is our worst year for shedding. I sweep constantly. I got a piece of black lab fur in my eye last week and then the eye dr found another. I now have an eye bandage over my eye and am the one eyed bandit for the next two weeks. I did get an eye patch to protect the eye from further infection. The price I pay for the Labs I so adore..... :heartbounce:
  14.
Blaze hates his bed. I bought a $70 bolster (I think that's what it's called) bed and he refuses to lay in it. My cats use it every single day though. As long as it gets used!
  15.
MsDeputy2uK9, sorry to hear about your eye!!!

How did you get black fur in your eye though? Miranda's brown, Shadow is yellow, isn't he? Are you hoarding a black one that we don't know about? Hmmmm....I was gonna go check the other post, but then I will lose this info! So correct me if I'm wrong.
  16.
Shadow is black, but I do hoard him. He is just so darn cute, in spite of the fact I got his fur in my eye. I dont want to get too graphic, but it was pretty bad and eye wash didnt do the trick. I had to seek professional medical help after my medic spouse did what he could to get it out. There was a second piece of fur there and the more I rubbed my eye, the deeper it went. So...yall beware of lab fur. With them shedding big time right now, it can happen and it isnt fun.

I hope your eye is getting better MsDeputy2uK9. Sounds painful! I have never had a Lab hair in my eye but I seem to constantly have one in my mouth. I must stop licking that dog
  17.
We have lab fur in everything. I always have to make sure when I am cooking that I have a lab fur free zone. Everyone knows we have dogs, due to the fact our clothes and cars have fur. I should have invested in stock options for those roller sticky tape things long ago. I would be rich by now.
My eye isnt killing me today...so the swearing is down to a minimal....but it's watering really bad. I was allowed to take the bandage off today for awhile. I seem to have a depth perception problem and have been running into things. My dogs are constantly hitting their heads on things being goofy. They just think I am one of the gang for now. Miranda tripped over my desk chair today and hurt her leg. She seems to be fine, but was running past it and one of the legs caught her. I noticed she has been watching the chair more closely since that. As the old saying goes...misery loves company.
  18.
Sorry to hear about your eye! that sounds painful, but the pirate look is totally in right now, so I'm a bit jealous of your patch!:pirate:
  19.
Right now it hurts so much I just want to scream. Oh wait.....I have! LOL
I keep running into things. Miranda keeps looking at me and wonders why we are stuck inside the house right now. I told her to just enjoy the air conditioning. Shadow wants to lick the patch off.
Johnny Depp would not be attracted to my eye patch, I am sure. They would have me walking the plank it looks to awful. v:fierce:
  20.
I found a great serving dish that I use everytime I have company It is big dish that say's
"EVERYTHING TASTE BETTER WITH DOG HAIR IN IT"

Haha! I want one of those!!!!!!!!!!!!! :jumping:
  21.
I saw one of those when we were in Gatlinburg in the Smokey Mountains. I wish I had gotten it. The next time we take a drive up there, I am getting it. I need a hanging plaque that says that, too. I swear today alone I could have made an entire dog out of the fur I swept up. Is anyone else having a record harvest of dog fur this year or are we unique? It's driving me insane. It's a good thing my mother doesnt come often. You could eat off her floors. If you ate of mine, you would be hacking up a hair ball.

Don't worry MsDeputy Monty is shedding fur so fast he really should be totally bald by now. The last fur harvest ended in April and I thought that was it for another year. How wrong I was!!!!!!! This one is worse. I'm thinking of making myself a nice brown Lab fur coat out of it for the winter :tooth:
  22.
To be honest, Blaze hasn't been shedding that much at all. My cats are the ones that are driving me nuts! Even when I use the Furminator on him, I don't get all that much off. Now my one girl, Genesis, I could refur another cat with all the hair that comes off of her!!!
  23.
Oh..go ahead and RUB IT IN that Blaze is not shedding that much. HAHAHAHAHA
Ok....where is the green with envy little icon?
    We need one.
I told Rip that it was a shame we couldnt harvest the dog fur and have it sewn into his scalp. He says his hair falls off his head and attaches itself to other parts of his body. Glad I dont have that problem, but wish the dogs fur would just make it's way to the trash can without my assistance. I seem to be the only one at our house that is bothered by it. Lucky me!
  24.
 Sorry to be the bearer of bad news!

I have noticed that Craig also is thinning at the top. Maybe we could make toupes (sp?) for them!!!!!

The hair doesn't bother me like it does Craig. I could care less. Like we talked before, if anyone doesn't like it....stay out of my house! :fingersear:
  25.
Hey....you might be onto something there....hair pieces made of dog fur! I could have made enough hair pieces just in the past week to outfit the local chapter of AARP! I guess the dog fur only bothers me because for some reason, my eyes seem to attract it and my feet! I can't tell you how many times I have felt like I had something in the bottom of my feet, only to discover it was dog fur! I am the only one in the house with this problem. I just THOUGHT those Old English Bobtails I had years ago shed bad. My Labs shed three times more.

Haha! Yes, I can see a full range of Lab fur head and facial accessories. We could sell them through the website
  27.
True.....blondes, brunettes and brownettes. Should make use of the fur somehow. It's a shame for it to go to waste.
  28.
    I'm in!

I may not get alot of hair off of Blaze, but I have a cat that is shedding like crazy. Her hair is alot softer than Blaze's!
  29.
Well I always said I would never allow animals on my furniture, but I guess I lied. I have a HUGE "U" shaped couched, however, I never seem to have a spot to sit... All three of my dogs lounge on the couch or sleep in my bed. I do crate my mini pin at night, my lab Buster sleeps beside my bed on his pillow,(one of many), and my dobe sleeps in my bed every night until I cannot take it anymore, usually around 2 am I put him in his crate... I saw the comment about the "everything tasting better with dog hair in it"... When I was a office manage, my team bought me a little wooden sign that said "No outfit is complete without dog hair"... Where ever I can sit or sleep so can my boys!!! the only problem is if I do have company, the boys don't care, you will become furniture to them. Sometimes, I wish they didn't think they were all lap dogs!!
  30.
I can relate to your comments, Misty! I sleep in a little knotted up ball, it seems. Then I get up stiff and can't walk, with a back ache and bent over. I know it's because of all my furry companions. I wake up and find I have a small portion of the bed to lay on. Pushing the dead weight of a dog in the middle of your bed can be a chore. They are probably awake, but pretending to sleep as I push to regain part of my space. I wear a lot of black and have to keep a roller in my van to try to get off the fur. I have had to start using it on my pillow at night. SOMEONE likes to curl up on my pillow to warm it up for me and I have to roll the pillow before I can use it.
  31.
I tried on 2 occassions to leave Blaze out of his crate at night and sleep with me in my bed. What a joke that was! He is into everything!! On the bed, off the bed, sniffing around the room & checking everything out. I would keep the bedroom door closed (we have a cat door in it, so when the cats got hot, they could come into my nice cool room!) and all he kept doing was sticking his head out the cat door!!! I can't let him have the run of the house either because that's when the cats come out and have peace & quiet. Not fair to them. Blaze would torment them all night and not let anyone get any rest! Kind of good he's a pain in the butt, because I am positive he would be a bed hog!
  32.
:rolling:Blaze's Mom, do you happen to have a picture of Blaze with his head sticking out the cat door? I think that would be hysterical!
  33.
Jen, do you have a myspace account? I have a picture on Blaze's page  of the last time his big butt fit THROUGH the cat door we have going to the basement. Now his head barely fits through it! :rolling:
  34.
I remember seeing Blaze's pic with his head through the cat door. He just knew he was going to fit through it...I could tell by the look on his face.
I used to crate all my dogs when they were young, when we left the house and at night. Then I started to let them stay out of the crate and put up a baby gate to control their movement. No one ever went over it except Shadow. He can jump over anything, but Miranda never attempts to do it. Shadow could jump over the moon, I am convinced, yet he has never tried to escape our yard or the deck to chase anything....not since he was about 5 months old and could slip his skinny body through the slats of the deck. Now I only crate him when we leave because I dont trust him. He would probably be fine, but I am not ready to chance it. I just put the baby gate up at the end of the hall and they can go in any rooms they want. Carmen usually has her door closed, so unless someone goes in there and gets closed in, they are able to go between the other bedrooms or bathrooms to drink from their porcelain bowls. Yeah....I know....bad habit, but unless we close the toilet seats, we can't keep them out of them and if you have ever sat down on the toilet lid when you were half asleep in the middle of the night...now that is a worse sensation than sitting down in the cold water when a man has failed to set the seat back down!
Bedtime crating works great as long as you start them immediately and treat it just like you do an infant you bring home from the hospital in the carseat. If you never give in, they know no better and it's not an issue. Give in once and they are going to give you grief about it!
If I have one that is sick, they are crated at night...no discussions.
  35.
Oh yeah, when Blaze is determined to do something, he does it! No ifs, ands or buts about it!

When I go into the basement he's always sticking his head through the cat door to see what I'm doing, but I always forget to take the camera down with me. I'll have to try to remember.

I trained everybody in my house to keep the toilet lids down. That started from when I got Ozzie & Genesis as kittens. I had a huge fear that they would fall in and can't get out and drown. Blaze would definately be a toilet drinker if we let him!

It would be nice to have Blaze have the run of the house when we are gone, but I don't see that happenening in the next few years. Maybe when he's an old man. He torments my cats something fierce and I wouldn't trust him alone with them. We lock him in the living room when we are at work and that atleast gives the cats the freedom to roam instead of hiding in the basement.

When he was a pup, we used a baby gate at the bottom of our stairs, but that didn't last too long because he would hurdle it! Scratch that idea!

The crate at night was started from the very beginning when we brought him home. Now he knows the routine at night. The minute I get out of the recliner, he gets up and heads to the back door and waits for me. I take my pills, grab a cig and we go out to go potty. The minute we come inside, either he sits on the stairs to wait for me or he will go right up and lay in his crate. I would love to have him sleep with me, but it ain't happening any time soon! I know I will bite those words someday!

I am sure if we enforced it with our Labs, we could break them of getting on the furniture. We dont have a lot of friends come over like we did when we lived in Louisiana. Then, it was a constant stream of friends and coworkers. Here we dont know that many people other than coworkers. I guess the way I look at it...it's our house, including their house, too. It doesn't bother us to have them sleep with us or sit up against us on the couch. Some nights I may only have a small section of bed to sleep on, but I have the undying love and devotion of 3 dogs who love me more than anything. I will glady take that feeling over a little less room and a little less sleep any day.
Maybe I am nuts, but I think I have plenty of company in that respect. Our pets are part of the family and they are in our lives for a reason. They would protect us in any way they could. All we have to do is accept their love and take care of them. I dont mind sharing my furniture with mine, as they share their love and shedding fur with me. LOL
